Debut Release Album from Michael Zerang & The Blue Lights

Michael Zerang has been called a “beyond category” musician and is considered by his peers to be one of the most accomplished and consistently engaging musicians currently active on the jazz scene today. Michael Zerang has performed with a who’s who of creative musicians spanning two continents. He resume includes work with fellow Chicago-based musicians Ken Vandermark and Hamid Drake as well as the sorely missed Fred Anderson.
The Michael Zerang & The Blue Lights Quintet – composed of Michael Zerang, drums & composition; Mars Williams & Dave Rempis, reeds; Josh Berman, cornet; and Kent Kessler, contrabass – will be releasing their debut album, “Songs From The Big Book Of Love” May 15th on Zerang's own Pink Palace Label. Stretching across eight original hard-grooving compositions, the new CD has been awaited with great anticipation, featuring the band at it fiery height playing a local club date in Chicago.

"I have been performing with Kent Kessler since 1977, when we were mere boys trying to discover our way to the music. I met Mars Williams and played with him for the first time in 1980 at the Creative Music Studios in Woodstock, NY, where I was studying at the time. Both Mars and Kent have been my frequent collaborators ever since these youthful days."

After several performances in the US, the quintet will head to Europe in November for a string of dates promoting the new album. June 13 also sees the record release concert at Constellation, Chicago.

"Dave Rempis and Joshua Berman are younger players that came to prominance in the mid 1990's in Chicago's rich, fringe music scene, and who both became leaders in their own rights as musicians, composers and arts activists. I am very happy that these wonderful friends and collaborators found the time to play in this band!"
